Alexis Mainland writes about observing the daily ritual of New York subway commuters reading a variety of materials from the perfectly timed 'Talk of the Town' section of The New Yorker, to immigrants taking comfort in materials in a familiar tongue. Since much of the subway system is yet to be powered by internet service, commuters take upon the ritual of reading, sometimes perfectly timed for their commute.
Interestingly enough, one commuter listening to her music while reading a novel, says that while reading she never looses touch with fellow passengers. Often pausing to talk to other readers.
