Creating public space (temporarily)

Since we have been discussing the merits of New Urbanism as a solution to our oil dependency, I thought it would be interesting to post this project, which proposes temporary public space from a building site (thanks to the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council) without relying on images of cobbled streets and Disney-esque town squares. Designed by architects Interboro Partners with a graphic identity by Thumb, the graveled space includes earth-filled plywood boxes in which trees are planted, and movable benches. The original plans for the site were put on hold because of the economic downturn.
